Dementia – the illness that no one talks about.
No one talks about the devastation it causes for individuals and their families.
How it robs the person of their identity and their abilities, and how when you have a loved one with dementia, the grieving process goes on and on, as you gradually lose a little bit more of them until they finally go, a shadow of their former self.
I have asked myself many times, why is no one talking about it?
Why are we not talking about that women are twice at risk of developing this disease?
Why are we not talking about the fact that dementia has been the leading cause of death for women since 2011, not cancer, not heart disease, DEMENTIA.
Why are we not talking about the year on year rise in dementia, with women bearing the brunt of this increase, whether that is through developing the disease themselves or being the carer for a loved one with it?
But I am talking about it.
In fact I’m shouting about it!
Because having lived through my family’s personal experience of the horror of the illness, I am determined to do everything I can to reduce my chances of developing it, and to help my family, friends and my community to do the same.
The research has been done, the data collected, it has been verified and repeated and we now know that 60-80% of dementia cases could be avoided with health promoting behaviours and lifestyle changes.
Did you know that fact? If not, don’t blame yourself, it really is not that well known.
Maybe it’s because as we say in the dementia prevention world, dementia is a disease of old age that starts in mid life.
People think they don't need to worry about it until they are older (by which time it is often too late for prevention).
Or they think its just an inevitable fact of ageing (it’s not by the way).
If you are a woman reading this, you could well be at risk.
I guess you might like to know how you can reduce that risk?
That is where I can help you.
I have developed a 5 step programme, science backed, tried and tested (and with my own little sprinkle of Liz's magic!) to help you.
