Navigating Career and Financial Challenges Over 40: A Guide for Women

In the third of our series looking at the subjects that really matter to you, it's the turn of career and financial concerns.

As women over 40, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities, both at home and in our careers.

This balancing act is challenging enough, never mind when menopause symptoms kick in as well!

Many women worry about how they are perceived at work if they experience brain fog, memory lapses, or other brain related difficulties.

Let's be honest, it can be super embarrassing if we forget stuff which a few years ago would never have been a problem.

And this added stress can make climbing the career ladder feel like an uphill battle.

Career Progression and Menopause

Women in their 40s and beyond are frequently at the peak of their careers, striving for higher positions and greater responsibilities.

Hormonal changes brought on by menopause can significantly impact our brain functions, making it difficult to concentrate, recall information, and stay on top of our tasks.

This makes us feel more anxiety around our job performance and how colleagues and superiors perceive our capabilities.

Financial Difficulties

In today's world, financial security is a major concern for us too.

The fear of job loss, especially if our performance is affected by menopause symptoms, looms large.

And we may have to manage other financial responsibilities as well, such as children's education, caring for aging parents, and planning for our own retirement.

Therefore, we would all benefit from having a good strategy to help our careers and money management.

3 Practical Tips for Managing Work and Brain Health

  • Communication is key: If you feel comfortable, consider talking to your employer about your symptoms. I know some companies and some individual bosses are better at this than others,  so choose who you talk to. Ask other women where you work who they have found the most helpful.

  • Stay Organized: Use planners, to-do lists, and digital reminders to help manage tasks and deadlines effectively. Breaking down large projects into smaller, manageable parts can make them less overwhelming.

  • Seek Support: Join support groups or networks of women experiencing similar challenges. In person is always great, but if there aren't any near you then online can be super supportive too.
